FLY FISHING
BAKER RIVER
The Baker River is the largest river in Chile and is the only outlet to the largest lake in Chile and the southern cone. It is no wonder, then, that its turquoise waters are home to the largest and wildest trout in Patagonia.
Known for its depth and strong currents, the Baker gives any angler the opportunity to catch rainbow trout and fario in any style they desire. From nymphing on gravel islands in the upper reaches of the river, to frantic hatch caddis hatching in one of its large countercurrents, to casting big streamers to its deep, structured banks, aggressive trout lurk around every corner.
The Baker River, Lake Bertrand and Lake General Carrera are in a perfect balance between the amount of trout and the food available for them. This makes the average size of trout absolutely larger than the rest of the waters we can find in the region.

The Green Baker Lodge is an experience of a lifetime. Great fishing. Great people. Wonderful scenery. The crew was attentive to all my needs. No matter how late into the evening we fished, well past dark, a hot meal was always awaiting us in the dining room. The guides knew the great spots, whether on the mighty river beside the lodge, or on a majestic inland sea a short drive away. Getting bored with fishing? try a side trip to explore Patagonia. Then back to 20" rainbow and brown trout. In one day, I caught over 13 impressive fish in three different waterways, including a joyful ride through the rapids back to the lodge.

We arrived to Balmaceda, Chile and took the breath taking ride to the Green Baker. The scenery leaves one awestruck. So incredibly beautiful.....pictures can't begin to show the magnitude of the Mountain Peaks and Lupin lined rivers. Once we arrived at the Green Baker we met the staff and took in the amazing massive blue/green Rio Baker. Pisco Sours on the deck along with some amazing charcuterie we geared up to fish the evening Caddis Hatch. The fishing was beyond awesome! The only reason we stopped hauling in trout was the lack of light (keep in mind it is light until 11 pm.) The next several days were just as wonderful! We fished from 8:30 in the morning until lunch at 3, then fished the evening Caddis Hatch until after 10 pm and then we ate dinner. This was at our request!!! We couldn't stay on the water long enough because the fishing was so good!!! My guide Rafael Barroso (Rafa) is one of the most personable and skilled guides I've ever fished with. Fishing with him was compete joy. He knew all of the best places to fish and was a master on the oars and jet motor. After just a few days, we all felt like family. It made it hard to leave! I will be back and will look forward to fishing with Rafa again!!! The whole experience at the Green Baker Lodge was amazing!!!!

Rafael's passion and love for Chile, and fly fishing is apparent from the getgo. He is bubbly, full of boundless energy, excitement, and a willingness to make sure your experience is awesome. His enthusiasm rubs off on his guides, who all are there having fun with upbeat personalities, smiles, and laughs every day. What a gorgeous river. The Baker is breathtakingly beautiful. You fish for great, healthy rainbows and browns on foam, streamers, ants, but you stay for the epic evening caddis hatch. Never seen anything like it. The fish are so willing to eat, and you don't want to get off the water, even when you can't see your fly. It is worth late dinners, and later drinks to experience that as much as possible during your stay. The dining area is inviting, and a great spot to congregate and tell fish stories.
